Final Project: First Ideas

Here are my beginning ideas for the final project in this class. These ideas are about combining my interest mainly in learning, art, data, games, story, and photography.

Questions I'm trying to answer:
  1. How can I use technology and data to teach people and create understanding?
  2. What are the different ways that I can create interactive stories?
  3. How can I use technology to create art?
  4. How can I use technology to create art for me?
  5. How can I use photography for means other than photos? Animation? Modeling? Experiences?
  • Interactive Data Visualization:
    • stories released: genres, pages...
    • photos produced: number, filters used, size...
  • Guided story with text representing physical world within story
    • device 6
    • sounds, images on walls
  • Static Illustration choice game
    • steins;gate
    • clannad
    • images as backgrounds
  • Text based fantasy game on web
    • Possible sprites for weapons and items
    • adventure, rogue, brogue
    • Text game with sprites to help the user remember what items they have and what they've done
  • generative art using data from photos
    • art creating art using technology
  • interactive photo Glitcher
    • Controlled vs unintentional (glitch)

Final project: motivations

Final project: domains I'm interested in

Installation: Testing, Future Directions, and final questions

Real world testing pics

When testing in the real world I found that people were interest though more testing is needed at more times when there would be more people in the coffee line.

Future Directions:
  • Larger display if in installation
  • Add Panorama section to my website
  • Make more panoramas
  • Smoother and more complete online experience
  • explore up and down
Triumphs
  • People didn't have to spend long to realize what the project was and how to interact
  • people seemed to like it
  • "Best panorama picture I've ever seen"
Failure
  • Needs more testing
  • Needs to be bigger
Additional Questions:
  • How big should the expereince be?
  • how should the experience be introduced?
  • Should there be something besides the screen? Additional information that be taken such as a card?
  • Would multiple screens along the wall be a good idea?

Installation: implementation

Installation: Questions and found restraints

Some additional questions and restraints after going through prototypes
  • Someone is in line:
    • This limits the amount of interaction time and number of tagged interest points
    • Also limits install to single panorama that is already loaded and ready to be interacted with when people get into line
  • How long is the line?
    • Best Placement?
    • Multiples of the install?
  • Should there be information about the location?
    • People don't have time to read
    • Could get people more engaged and lead to furthure exploration after leaving the device
    • If the device was in a different place this could change
  • Should the speed of scrolling be changed?
    • Natural vs faster (more exploration)

Installation Prototype: Role 2

Role: Interacting with the installation
  • User will touch the screen (ipad)
  • Drag around and explore the environment
  • Read through names of tagged points of interest (no links)

Installation Prototype: Role

Role: finding the installation
  • User is waiting in line for coffee
  • User is bored
  • Observes install on wall and engages for as long as they are able
  •  If there are people in line after the first person then they may be more quickly engaged after seeing the first person interacting with the install

Installation Prototype: Look and Feel
