Final Project: First Ideas

Here are my beginning ideas for the final project in this class. These ideas are about combining my interest mainly in learning, art, data, games, story, and photography.

Questions I'm trying to answer:
  1. How can I use technology and data to teach people and create understanding?
  2. What are the different ways that I can create interactive stories?
  3. How can I use technology to create art?
  4. How can I use technology to create art for me?
  5. How can I use photography for means other than photos? Animation? Modeling? Experiences?
  • Interactive Data Visualization:
    • stories released: genres, pages...
    • photos produced: number, filters used, size...
  • Guided story with text representing physical world within story
    • device 6
    • sounds, images on walls
  • Static Illustration choice game
    • steins;gate
    • clannad
    • images as backgrounds
  • Text based fantasy game on web
    • Possible sprites for weapons and items
    • adventure, rogue, brogue
    • Text game with sprites to help the user remember what items they have and what they've done
  • generative art using data from photos
    • art creating art using technology
  • interactive photo Glitcher
    • Controlled vs unintentional (glitch)

Final project: questions to answer

Final project: motivations

Final project: domains maps

Final project: domains I'm interested in

Installation: Testing, Future Directions, and final questions

Real world testing pics

When testing in the real world I found that people were interest though more testing is needed at more times when there would be more people in the coffee line.

Future Directions:
  • Larger display if in installation
  • Add Panorama section to my website
  • Make more panoramas
  • Smoother and more complete online experience
  • explore up and down
Triumphs
  • People didn't have to spend long to realize what the project was and how to interact
  • people seemed to like it
  • "Best panorama picture I've ever seen"
Failure
  • Needs more testing
  • Needs to be bigger
Additional Questions:
  • How big should the expereince be?
  • how should the experience be introduced?
  • Should there be something besides the screen? Additional information that be taken such as a card?
  • Would multiple screens along the wall be a good idea?

Installation: implementation

Installation: Questions and found restraints

Some additional questions and restraints after going through prototypes
  • Someone is in line:
    • This limits the amount of interaction time and number of tagged interest points
    • Also limits install to single panorama that is already loaded and ready to be interacted with when people get into line
  • How long is the line?
    • Best Placement?
    • Multiples of the install?
  • Should there be information about the location?
    • People don't have time to read
    • Could get people more engaged and lead to furthure exploration after leaving the device
    • If the device was in a different place this could change
  • Should the speed of scrolling be changed?
    • Natural vs faster (more exploration)

Installation Prototype: Role 2

Role: Interacting with the installation
  • User will touch the screen (ipad)
  • Drag around and explore the environment
  • Read through names of tagged points of interest (no links)

Installation Prototype: Role

Role: finding the installation
  • User is waiting in line for coffee
  • User is bored
  • Observes install on wall and engages for as long as they are able
  •  If there are people in line after the first person then they may be more quickly engaged after seeing the first person interacting with the install

Installation Prototype: Look and Feel

Idea for Installation 4: Face Puzzle Game

This puzzle was the basis for this idea. Using some sort of electric device with a camera the user would take a picture of their face. This picture would be split into nine pieces and randomized. The user would then have to solve the puzzle (as above) to put their face back together.

Idea for Installation 3: Interactive Comics

On some sort of electric device there will be a selection of digital comics. Users will pick a comic then as they read there will be many different branching points where the reader will have to make a decision to progress the story in different ways.

Idea for Installation 2: Expanding Map

A map that expands the size of countries or states where people are from the most. There would be a field where people input where they are from. As more people input their home location then the map will slowly morph into a data visualization of peoples' home locations. A dynamic data visualization.

Here is static representation of this idea:

Idea for installation 1:Interactive 360 Degree Panoramas

Panoramas from different places around Boulder with labeled spots of interest. These would allow people to see parts of Boulder that they haven't maybe been to before in an interactive way. This could be implemented on a laptop or touch screen.

Atlas Lobby Installation: Examination of the space

While examination the Atlas lobby space I noticed several things. First, the people who are staying within the space are all working at the tables. This can be either alone or with a group. If they are alone then generally they will sit with at least one seat in between them and the next person. If they are part of a group then they take over a corner of the table.

Second, people who are not staying in the space either walk straight through or are waiting for class or coffee. The people waiting for class usually lean against the wall across from the stairs looking at phones. This is a potential space for an installation. The people waiting for coffee all line up against the wall that leads into the coffee shop. This spot is a very good potential space for an installation against the wall as people are waiting for coffee.

The people that could be effectively targeted by an installation would be those waiting around. However since they aren't waiting for long the installation then becomes constrained into a project that can be interacted with in a very short amount of time.
